Relationship Advice: What the Hell Does "Taking a Break" Mean?

Why are so many couples taking a break in their relationship today? Is this so they can have someone "on hold" while they scout out their next conquest? Who would put themselves in this position of waiting for their partner to make up their mind whether they are good enough for them or not? Anyone who wants a break should move on without trying to have their cake & eat it too.
